Rommy G. Saavedra
Study Abroad, something that few people do yet one of the most amazing experiences one could have. My name is Rommy G. Saavedra and I am now a senior at FIU. This past Summer I decided to go on the European Studies Program, and I must say it has been the best decision ever. Being an International Relations major studying in Genova- Italy was absolutely startling. With this trip I was able to see the similarities and differences between the cultures, each on a different side of the world. Studying abroad not only gives you the opportunity to study in a different university but it gives you the opportunity to become a local in a complete different culture. I remember arriving to Genova and having to walk through a Vicolo (very Small Street) on my way to my beautiful apartment and thinking to myself “I wonder who has walked down these streets” everything in Italy is history and it is just so amazing that you can imagine how that same street looked hundreds of years ago. During my Study Abroad I was able to make friends, try foods I had never tried before, see places that I had only read about or seen in movies, and gain a knowledge that will not only benefit me in my career but also in my personal life. The people you meet are people that you have a chance to become lifetime friends with. Food in Italy is nothing like the “Italian” food here in the States, food in Italy is fresh and delicious. With this being said, I have to mention the late night walks through this antique city with an amazing Gelato in your hand is just priceless. I loved Studying Abroad!
