CONVERSATIONS ON EUROPE

'Gilets Jaunes in France: The Yellow Vests'

For the first installment of Conversations on Europe for 2019-2020 academic year, please join us for an interactive virtual roundtable discussion on the "Gilets Jaunes"

The gilets jaunes, or yellow vests, are members of a grassroots political movement that began in France in October 2018 with widespread protests disrupting travel for months.

During this session, our panel of experts will not only discuss who the gilets jaunes are and what they were demanding, but also the larger contexts of French street protests, European politics, and the role of digital activism in organizing the movement.

Panelists:

  • Sheri Berman, Department of Political Science, Barnard College, Columbia University
  • Cole Stang, Freelance Journalist, Paris
  • CĂ©lia Belin, Center on the United States and Europe, Brookings Institution

Moderator: Jae-Jae Spoon, Department of Political Science, University of Pittsburgh
