Russia’s Democratic Opposition: Past and Future
Film Screening and Conversation with Vladimir Kara-Murza

Join the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs for a film screening of Nemtsov, a documentary about the late leader of the Russian opposition, Boris Nemtsov. Directed by his friend and colleague Vladimir Kara-Murza, the film chronicles a remarkable political life and contains rare archival footage, including footage from the Nemtsov family.
Following the screening, FIU Senior Fellow David J. Kramer will lead a discussion with Kara-Murza, a noted Russian activist and opposition leader in his own right who survived two poisonings in Russia in the past three years. They will discuss some of the most pressing topics about Russia today, including the film and the future of Russia after the March 18th presidential election, which has already been widely criticized.
Vladimir V. Kara-Murza is the chairman of the Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom and vice chairman of Open Russia, a platform for civil society and pro-democracy activists launched in 2014 by former political prisoner Mikhail Khodorkovsky. He is a member of the federal council of the People’s Freedom Party and a senior adviser at the Institute of Modern Russia. Kara-Murza was a candidate for the Russian Parliament in the 2003 elections, and has served as campaign chairman for presidential candidate Vladimir Bukovsky (2007–08) and adviser to State Duma opposition leader Boris Nemtsov (2000–03). He was a journalist for several Russian independent news outlets and editor in chief of the Russian Investment Review. Kara-Murza has testified before several parliaments and is a regular contributor to The Washington Post and World Affairs Journal, among others. He has been profiled on CBS News' "60 Minutes." Kara-Murza holds an M.A. in history from the University of Cambridge.
