People around the globe are following with great interest next month’s U.S. presidential and Congressional elections. The outcome will have worldwide significance. At the same time, the process and conduct of the election matter, too. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which regularly monitors elections in its 57 member states, will have an election observation mission to monitor the American election.

This will not be the first time the OSCE will observe an American election – it has done so eight previous times, most recently in November 2018. But the polarization and controversy surrounding this election heightens the importance of outside observers. Ambassador Urszula Gacek heads the OSCE Mission for the OSCE’s International Observation Mission for the US General Election 2020.

Presented by the Ruth K. and Shepard Broad Distinguished Lecture Series, in collaboration with the European and Eurasian Studies Program and the Vaclav Havel Program for Human Rights and Diplomacy
